What Will You Be Rocking this Spring/Summer 2011?

Fashion in 2010 was slightly schizophrenic, tittering on two polar brinks. As Claudia recapped in her 2010 retrospective post, the wild and wacky as seen on Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Cher Lloyd were counterbalanced with minimalistic sleek chic propagated by Phoebe Philo and loved by style icons like Carey Mulligan, Clemence Poesy and Olivia Palermo. What lies ahead for 2011 though? Here I take a look into my magic fashion crystal ball to suss out the looks and trends that will dominate this spring/summer season - perfectly applicable to our warm climate.

The Future is Flawless
As seen at: Narciso Rodriquez and Prada Spring/Summer 2011

With a nod, a wink and a nudge to the minimalism of the '90s, Spring/Summer 2011 is a throwback to the sleek chic that dominated the era, with an updated element of architecture. Clean lines that accentuate the form are interspersed with sheer bits of transluscency for some sexy peek-a-boo skin action.

Get the face: Makeup is kept clean with hints of metallics like gold around eyes to illuminate. Dewy skin is a must here, so grab that exfoliator and go to town!

Get the look: Ultra, a new luxury womenswear line that is both stylish and sustainable.

Glam Rock and Roll
As seen at: Balenciaga and Burberry Prorsum Spring/Summer 2011

Swapping sneers for studs and some swagger in your step is what glam rock and roll is all about in 2011. With an air of untamed magnetism, this look is one for the confident powerful new world lady, who mixes dainty sheath dresses with hard-edge leather jackets.

Get the face: Almost as if channeling the iconic Amazonian woman, the look emphasizes earthy tones like copper and bronze to add depth and ferocity to even the most demure lady.

Get the look: Zero to Ten, a new line that debuted at Malaysia-International Fashion Week 2010.

Building blocks of colour
As seen at: Diane von Furstenberg and Vena Cava Spring/Summer 2011

It's hard to be dour in the summer time sun, so put away the monochrome and celebrate colours instead. In 2011, the magic fashion crystal ball reveals splashes of bold colour in outfits. There's no two ways about this trend; flaunt your favourite colour in all its entirety!

Get the face: Youthfulness is the order of the day so makeup is kept fresh. You can't go wrong with a pink or purple eyeshadow with a coral-toned lip colour.

Get the look: Inspired by the exotic peacock, MAC's new collection, Peacocky, has a range of vibrant colours to experiment with.

Romance comes alive
As seen at: Zac Posen and Marc Jacobs Spring/Summer 2011

Maybe it's the allure of summer romances and spring flings but this year red dominates the streets. Closer to home, the trend not only fulfills the traditional expects of upcoming Chinese New Year and Valentine's Day but it also mirrors the rising sensuality celebrated on the runways.

Get the face: Luscious red lips are the order of the day with silky matte foundation being the perfect companion. Blush is most definitely a must for some fresh-faced charm.

Get the look: With offerings from Tom Ford, Lancome and Christian Dior, to name a few, the choice of red lips are plenty. Here's a guide to picking out the right red for you. Topshop Make Up has a range of blushes and of course, good ol' classics like Benefit's Benetint.

Here's a fun fact about trends. Did you know that the looks and trends we see on the runway are a product of five years of research? At the P&G Global Beauty Debate Event in Beijing, Vassiliki Petrou, the P&G Beauty Trend Expert, essentially the lady who is god and has a hand in creating the fashion trends, shared that trend prediction involves working five years ahead - where social, economical, ecological factors are taken into account.

Two years before the trends hit the runway, the looks for fashion, colour and styling are refined and finalize. Hence, if you think about it, somewhere in a laboratory lies the groundwork of the haute look of 2016!

Which was your favourite Spring/Summer 2011 runway look and what trend do you think you'll be adopting this season?

F**k You Shoes

I've always liked the idea of wearing your heart on your sleeve - even if it's lonesome or broken, I say flaunt it this Monday all the same! Last night, I found the cutest way to veto Valentine's Day! Just for fun, here's how to say, "Forget you!" with your feet! Lindsay, if you're reading this, here's how you can flip the judge at your next courtcase.

So we all know about "Forget me" shoes. They're the overpriced designer stilettoes, generally strappy and skinny-heeled, that invites guys to the bedroom. Guys who you probably think will pay off the price of the heels.

"Forget you" shoes are generally heels with a strong arch and sturdy sole. They say you that stand tall solo, you Glamazon you!

A very cute way to display your relationship status on your feet is through Massimo Dogana, who just released the "Forget off" shoes in time for Valentine's Day. A little more blunt than the original "Forget you" shoes, these literally flip the dude you're trying to ward off! And you could do it with a kick to the shin!

What say you? Wearing your heart on your feet is a cute way to celebrate Valentine's... A great way to spin wearing reds, pinks, frills, printed Hallmarks or heart-shaped glasses. What say you? How would you style your Valentine? Just for fun, let's discuss!

Icon of the month (february 2011) : Robsten

In the spirit of Valentine's, I decided to tribute a sartorial power couple this week. What I came to find, quite unexpectedly, was that Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart were MTV's Best Couple and InStyle's Most Stylish Celebrity Couple for 2010. Apparently their magazine's editors were robsessed with Pattinson's "public school boy style" and Stewart's "laid back American approach to fashion." Right on. Let's look beyond their scruff to figure out how they beat out Kate Moss and Jamie Hince, shall we?

Let's start off with them individually. Pattinson started working at the age of 12 as a male model. It was a short-lived career. Pattinson blamed his lack of castings on his masculine appearance:

"When I first started I was quite tall and looked like a girl, so I got lots of jobs, because it was during that period where the androgynous look was cool. Then, I guess, I became too much of a guy, so I never got any more jobs."

Albeit lackluster, it's important to note his modeling career - it crafted his smoulder.

Pairing that smoulder with a shaggily sculpted mass of hair made him instantly iconic when he debuted it in Twilight.

Even dressing down like a hobo couldn't keep the ladies away!

Pattinson's street style is one that's revered by fashion editors. It's often described as 'emo and 90s grunge' and praised as a unique brand of laid back in Hollywood. Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana think he's "extremely elegant and inspiring, the true essence of a contemporary man". GQ agrees - they named him the Best Dressed British Male of 2009.

Pattinson does admittedly clean up very nicely. He looks amazing even in ill-fitted suits!

Stewart's casual style runs on the same thread of scruff. She lives in t-shirts and jeans, and doesn't wash her hair too often either.

And quite unfortunately, she's distinct for her awkwardness. Which is such a shame, because she's such a pretty girl.

The Twilight saga made Stewart a household name overnight at the age of 18. Clearly having lived in sneakers until then, we got to see Stewart have an awkward phase forced upon her. She experimented with red carpet fashion, but much of her efforts were in vain - it's hard to get past how painfully uncomfortable she looked in anything.

She's still blossoming at her own pace.

It's unclear when Robsten truly began - romance rumors had been swirling about since the dawn of filming Twilight. Each of which, they refused to acknowledge until the paparazzi managed pictorial proof in August 2009.

While they've continued to keep their relationship low key, the few paparazzi pictures of Robsten combined showed us that grunge and punk looked good together.

We first saw them fully cleaned up in editorials. And they looked good. Unfortunately, modeling really was not their forte.

Their first couple of shoots seemed a little contrived. And I could never get past Stewart's awkwardness!

I've personally enjoyed their out takes so much more.

Stewart's transparency with discomfort didn't help her on the red carpet either.

But it really was lovely to watch her grow more comfortable in her own skin with Pattinson by her side.

And they're starting to hit all the right notes now.

And just recently, Mario Testino shot Stewart for Vogue's February Issue, and managed to turn her vulnerability fierce. Many aren't terribly fond of the spread, but I see it as a breakthrough - I can finally appreciate, let alone see, the clothes on her back.

Whether or not I agree with their sartorial accolades thus far, I am admittedly excited to see them next hit the red carpet for Breaking Dawn. I see it as their red carpet convocation and they are going to pass with flying colours!

But what do you think? Are you a fan of Robsten's style? Would they have topped your Best Dressed Couple list of 2010? If no, who would've?

How To Wear Asymmetry

When it comes to aesthetic beauty, we usually prefer symmetrical faces and objects. But in fashion, that concept can be thrown out the door. As we explore the latest runway shows, we’ll discover how designers have incorporated asymmetry into their season looks. Looks like we have a whole new love for asymmetrical clothing.
Here’s a mini guide to show how you can sport these asymmetrical looks effortlessly.

olive green asymmetrical lanvin dress

We can give thanks to Greek Goddesses for leading the way to this classic staple of asymmetry. In many of the Spring/Summer 2011 RTW looks, we can see that the one shoulder silhouette is back – and fiercer than ever. Whether you’re into draping, florals, or accented shoulders, this asymmetric concept can make you feel like a Goddess in no time.
How It’s Done:
Alice + Olivia styled this side-to-side silhouette in their Pre-Fall 2011 collection appropriately with simple accessories like a gold belt and glasses. Since you’re already baring legs and shoulder, you don’t need many accessories to distract your overall look. Here, simplicity is the key and piling up the accessories will just kill the “toga” look.
If you’re not into the minimalistic look, try bold colours or floral print pieces. If you’re already wearing that much print, again, you don’t need to wear loads of jewelry or accessories. The focal point is to focus on complementing the asymmetry.

Here, you’ll see the combination of colour blocking with asymmetrical colours. The main focus here are the odd geometric shapes with the different colour blocks. The architectural shapes and colours yield an illusion of asymmetry for the normal onlooker. The intricate geometric shapes and colours combined definitely represent a modern take of asymmetry.
How It’s Done:
The mixing of colours and shapes can provide a perfect illusion that you’re wearing something asymmetrical even though the piece itself isn’t. Make sure you choose contrasting colours (i.e., yellow and red) and oddly shaped figures to show your playful and artistic side, like Viktor & Rolf for their Spring 2011 RTW collection.

Aside from the “toga” look, you can also opt for a diagonal hemline when achieving the classic asymmetrical look. Whether it’s in a top or dress form, diagonal hemlines can make your look go from drab to casual cool instantly.
How It’s Done:
Executing this style is fairly easy since you can choose from diagonally plunging maxi dresses to cropped tops. You can wear these pieces as is for a classic, flowy silhouette look. Or, to further exemplify your unique style, get inspired from Sass and Bide in their Spring 2011 RTW collection by adding a funky, embellished vest or chained belt over the asymmetrical clothing.

While it isn’t trendy to sport a mullet hairstyle nowadays, you sure can sport a mullet-inspired asymmetrical dress. It’s almost like wearing a wedding dress with a train following behind you in this modern, updated approach. The asymmetry starts from the front to the back and can come in different patterns/textures to accentuate the dress further.
How It’s Done:
For an easy alternative, you can showoff your asymmetry by wearing some shorts underneath your trench coat. Just don’t button up your trench so that you can show your legs while also covering the back. Be like Alice + Olivia in their Spring 2011 collection by wearing a patterned jumper and solid colour trench to make your look pop. You can also style with a bold lip colour and bright coloured wedges to further achieve the look.

So, is it possible to achieve proportionality when it comes to asymmetrical clothing? According these looks, why yes!
Happy Styling!

H&M Goes Green (Again)

Technically, H&M is going ‘white’ for their upcoming eco-friendly line, titled “Conscious Collection” following up last year’s “Garden Collection.” H&M’s all white-themed “Conscious Collection” will be out in stores on April 14, and so far, we like what we see!

Just about a year ago, when H&M launched their first organic-cotton line, “Garden Collection,” many people were thrilled with the idea that the line would include certified-organic pieces. It was the first time the company has ever approached an environment-friendly concept. However, it turns out that the “Garden Collection” didn’t even include certified-organic pieces, claimed by the German newspaper, Financial Times. Instead, the label actually had genetically-modified cotton piecesorganiccotton from India rather than organically grown ones, causing a huge controversy that the clothing line was falsely advertised.

In addition, around the same time, H&M was caught in a previous controversy for throwing away and destroying perfectly fine clothes just to make way for newer collections. Talk about a double whammy in the face!

Still, this adversity did not prevent H&M from continuing on with more eco-friendly collections. Meet H&M’s upcoming “Conscious Collection” which will be out in all of the H&M stores on April 14, 2011. While H&M currently is selling a few very affordable eco-friendly pieces (from their “Sustainable Style” line), this upcoming “Conscious Collection” will include a more cohesive theme, featuring a variety of whites for women, men, and kids. In addition, straying away from last year’s concept of just including certified-organic cotton, this year’s “Conscious Collection” will include a variety of environmentally-friendly materials such as organic cotton, organic linen, recycled polyester, and Tencel. So far, so good!

white cotton H&M dress

The entire collection is comprised of white and beige pieces, reflecting one of the hottest Spring 2011 colour trends. Unlike last year’s “Garden Collection,” the “Conscious Collection” seems to give out that relaxed, fresh vibe, which is perfect for the springtime minimalist.

However, the women’s collection does also include a range of details and pieces, such as romantic laces, flowy frills, scalloped-hems, and cocktail dresses for those who want more oomph in their clothing. On the men’s side, H&M keep its classic by giving us structured, tailored looks such as blazers, classic tees, and contemporary pants.

No details on what the kids’ collection will be like, but we’re sure that they will look just as fashionable as their adult counterparts. All these pieces will be $59.95 and under, making any fashionista(o) happy and wanting more.

We still have a couple of months to go for the collection to come out, but in the meantime, you can still check out their Spring 2011 “Sustainable Line” to shop a few colourful and eco-friendly pieces.

How do you guys like the collection? Are you guys excited?

Happy Shopping!

The Black Swan film has shown an impact on 2011 fashion trends. In conjunction, it has influenced beauty as well. The ballerina updo was worn by plenty in the spring 2011 fashion shows, and red carpet events. From messy to sleek, everyone is wearing it differently. The grocery store, or a night out with the girls, there are many places to wear this look. You could even start with something very chic and slick, but then let it unravel for a sexy night style.

You don’t have to be a ballerina to look the part. This updo makes for a classy and fresh spring awakening. Forget your drab and overdone ponytail, or slouchy winter hair. Dig out your bobby pins, and start to create your own version. Looking pretty and sweet, your posture will sure improve and confidence will exude wearing this hairstyle. Twirl, and spin down the streets in the heat of this trend.

THE BOLD SWAN

Spring accessories

To conclude The Black Swan beauty trend, bold eyes are taking over. The iconic makeup Natalie Portman wore for her portrayal as the black swan in her character’s Swan Lake performance is sweeping the spring scene. Taking a cue from the bold eye shadows used, colors like green, purple and blue are replacing the intense black. Your daring side is calling, so take a leap and try a vivid eye on for size.

Makeup companies like MAC or even drugstore brands already carry a variety of striking shades. Spring collections are sure to offer some more modern and juicy colors, so keep your eyes peeled. On your next makeup spree, just test out a few shadows or liners for fun! Beauty is supposed to be a fun process, so even if you aren’t ready to pull off a completely covered green eye, perhaps a liner would be best.

THINK PINK

Spring accessories

Who could forget the opening number to Funny Face? If you haven’t yet seen it, here are a few lyrics; “Think pink! think pink! when you shop for summer clothes. Think pink! think pink! if you want that quel-que chose. Red is dead, blue is through, Green’s obscene, brown’s taboo.” It seems the character of Maggie Prescott continues to be right. Pink is in, so spread the news.

Celebrities galore and runaways have been sporting pink lips. When the weather starts to sweeten up, pink lipsticks will be all the rage. Of course, it is a common color so don’t fret. Picking your perfect pink pucker will be a breeze. Lipsticks aren’t as icky as they used to be, so if you haven’t worn it in a while now is the time! From matte to glossy and fruity smelling to non-scented there are many formulations. Take some time at your beauty counters and find your individual pink shade!

Spring 2011 beauty trends are very wearable this season. Of course, they are all easily attainable to make individual as well. When you go out dancing with your pretty updo, neon eyes, or pink lips, you’ll feel so free and bright! Freshen up from winter, and step into the positive vibes of tomorrow! Spring is around the corner, so practice your styling skills, and liven your everyday makeup with a fruity blast of fun!
