Hana Tajima-Simpson of Style Covered is an up-and-coming UK designer of Maysaa but that isn't what caught our eyes; as one of the few fashion bloggers sporting the hijab (head cover, scarf) yeay go hijab-ers! lol hey i also wear hijab, anyway Hana stands out in terms of personal style and creativity.
Being of mix parentage (she's half Japanese and half English), Hana has the advantage of two different cultures - the demureness of the east and mindset to step out of the box from her part western upbringing. She is also unafraid to infuse her personal style and her religious views together (Hana converted into Islam about four years ago and have had a minor style change).
Hana started blogging over a year ago; using it to express the different possibilities of styling oneself despite living far away from countries where beautiful and religious-appropriate clothes could be found in abundance.
Yet, styling and designing has always been her first love!
"I used to create my own 'Vogue' magazine with sketches and make clothes out of old dresses, curtains, anything I was allowed to cut up, and occasionally things I wasn't." Hana said, through our e-mail interview.
As a blogger, Hana's personal inspiration comes from old movies, personal vintage collection and mostly portrayal of her own emotions. Hana always make it a point to wear something that reflects her mood - whether it's sunny or grungy, it has to communicate inner feelings. In terms of icon - her choices would have to be Lupe Fiasco, VV Brown, Alexa Chung, Mos Def and Freja Beha Erichsen.
Where as a designer, Alexander McQueen is on top of her inspiration list, as well as Haider Ackermann and Alber Elbaz.
Admitting to never being a trend-driven sort of girl, Hana loves the festival vibe that usual mixes together pretty florals and rocker chic ensembles.
Hana goes for vintage and unique pieces and swears by Shoreditch in London as her shopping spot of choice.
For now, she is on a quest for the perfect leather jacket, a Lee McQueen print dress, anything vintage Halston or from the Lanvin resort collection, Chau Ha r Lee shoes, and a Fannie Schiavoni chain necklace.
Lastly, I asked for a personal style advice from Hana, and she said, "Don't get caught up in what looks good on other people, just to fit in. You have to find something you're comfortable with, a look that expresses your personality."
