The Best Hats at the 2012 Royal Ascot Races

This year, for the very first time, the Royal Ascot issued a dress code for all guests coming to catch a day at the horse races. Among the new strictures—which included morning suits in blue or black only for the men and strict hemline guidelines for the ladies—perhaps the most talked about (especially among those with a keen interest in the particular tenets of British style) is that there were no fascinators allowed on the grounds this year, not even for the royals, and only proper toppers (those that have a base of at least four inches) were permissible. Instead of lamenting the loss, however, the well-heeled women and men arrived at the gates wearing hats of the highest style.
