Icon of the month (february 2011) : Robsten

In the spirit of Valentine's, I decided to tribute a sartorial power couple this week. What I came to find, quite unexpectedly, was that Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart were MTV's Best Couple and InStyle's Most Stylish Celebrity Couple for 2010. Apparently their magazine's editors were robsessed with Pattinson's "public school boy style" and Stewart's "laid back American approach to fashion." Right on. Let's look beyond their scruff to figure out how they beat out Kate Moss and Jamie Hince, shall we?

Let's start off with them individually. Pattinson started working at the age of 12 as a male model. It was a short-lived career. Pattinson blamed his lack of castings on his masculine appearance:

"When I first started I was quite tall and looked like a girl, so I got lots of jobs, because it was during that period where the androgynous look was cool. Then, I guess, I became too much of a guy, so I never got any more jobs."

Albeit lackluster, it's important to note his modeling career - it crafted his smoulder.

Pairing that smoulder with a shaggily sculpted mass of hair made him instantly iconic when he debuted it in Twilight.

Even dressing down like a hobo couldn't keep the ladies away!

Pattinson's street style is one that's revered by fashion editors. It's often described as 'emo and 90s grunge' and praised as a unique brand of laid back in Hollywood. Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana think he's "extremely elegant and inspiring, the true essence of a contemporary man". GQ agrees - they named him the Best Dressed British Male of 2009.

Pattinson does admittedly clean up very nicely. He looks amazing even in ill-fitted suits!

Stewart's casual style runs on the same thread of scruff. She lives in t-shirts and jeans, and doesn't wash her hair too often either.

And quite unfortunately, she's distinct for her awkwardness. Which is such a shame, because she's such a pretty girl.

The Twilight saga made Stewart a household name overnight at the age of 18. Clearly having lived in sneakers until then, we got to see Stewart have an awkward phase forced upon her. She experimented with red carpet fashion, but much of her efforts were in vain - it's hard to get past how painfully uncomfortable she looked in anything.

She's still blossoming at her own pace.

It's unclear when Robsten truly began - romance rumors had been swirling about since the dawn of filming Twilight. Each of which, they refused to acknowledge until the paparazzi managed pictorial proof in August 2009.

While they've continued to keep their relationship low key, the few paparazzi pictures of Robsten combined showed us that grunge and punk looked good together.

We first saw them fully cleaned up in editorials. And they looked good. Unfortunately, modeling really was not their forte.

Their first couple of shoots seemed a little contrived. And I could never get past Stewart's awkwardness!

I've personally enjoyed their out takes so much more.

Stewart's transparency with discomfort didn't help her on the red carpet either.

But it really was lovely to watch her grow more comfortable in her own skin with Pattinson by her side.

And they're starting to hit all the right notes now.

And just recently, Mario Testino shot Stewart for Vogue's February Issue, and managed to turn her vulnerability fierce. Many aren't terribly fond of the spread, but I see it as a breakthrough - I can finally appreciate, let alone see, the clothes on her back.

Whether or not I agree with their sartorial accolades thus far, I am admittedly excited to see them next hit the red carpet for Breaking Dawn. I see it as their red carpet convocation and they are going to pass with flying colours!

But what do you think? Are you a fan of Robsten's style? Would they have topped your Best Dressed Couple list of 2010? If no, who would've?
